Greetings beloved friends and family of St. Matthew United Methodist Church

It is a point of great joy for me that in the last few weeks you have graciously and warmly welcomed the voices of women in ministry. I am thankful for these who have shared their theology and history with our congregation. Our recognition of the 70th Anniversary of Women in Ministry marks a meaningful addition to the ministries of St. Matthew. It also helps us fulfill our goal of embracing diversity as we have provided a safe and affirming space for historically marginalized voices to be heard. In the future, we will continue to have special events focused on showcasing the voices of the marginalized. Thank you for being on this adventure with me.

Our Fall Festival is about 10 days away! I am excited and nervous. I am also reminded that this event, carried out to honor God and welcome our neighbors, will be successful even if one life, or one family who attends has a better life because we are here. There are many moving parts and quite a few of them are complicated. But I am encouraged and empowered by the way all of you have embraced this work and are willing to do ministry in this neighborhood. This is so much more than a typical fall festival. This is our introduction to the Eastside! We are making disciples for Jesus Christ with the intention of transforming our area of this world. Thanks be to God for the chance to do so.

There are loads of other things happening at St. Matthew as well. The Rev. Julia Puac-Romero will be preaching for us this Sunday, All Saints Sunday, November 1st. We will complete our Women in Ministry series on November 8, 2026 with the Rev. Dr. Jennifer Pick preaching for us. We have experienced some of the best preaching in our conference as part of this series. We have also been able to hear the message of the gospel through the voice of United Methodist clergy. Thank you for being the kind of congregation that welcomes the words and wisdom of others. All of our guest speakers have told me that this is the most welcoming and friendliest congregation that they know. You are God’s amazing and beloved children, and you make others feel the same.

St. Matthew Women’s United Luncheon is November 12, 2026. Gathering begins at 11:30 with lunch at 12noon. The group will be assembling hygiene bags for Under the Bridge Ministries. Please attend if you are able. You are also encouraged to participate by giving generously to the general fund of the church. All of the items placed in the bags are purchased with your tithe and offering dollars. This is also a gospel-based ministry, providing for those folks who are living without the basic necessities of life.

Eastside Community Assistance Thanksgiving bags are due back to the church November 15th. You may bring them back any time before that and place them in the hallway adjacent to the sanctuary. We will help you unload them from your car.

Finally, Daylight Saving Time ends November 1st at 0200. What that means for you is that you turn your clock back by one hour when you go to be on Saturday night and enjoy the extra hour to sleep on Sunday morning.

Blessings to all of you! Mary

  • Kids’ News: Share More Than Words

    Scripture: 1 Thessalonians 2:1–8

What is the best way to tell someone you care about them?

You could say, “I care about you,” and words are important. But what if you also sat with them when they were lonely, listened when they were sad, or helped when they needed you?

Paul told his friends that when he shared the good news about God, he shared more than words. He shared his life with them because he cared about them.

That is an important part of following Jesus. We can tell people that God loves them, but we can also help them experience that love through us. We can listen, welcome, encourage, forgive, share, and simply be there when someone needs a friend.

Sometimes the way we live says even more than our words.

    Living It This Week

Show someone you care without telling them first. Let your actions speak!

    Family Challenge

Choose someone your family cares about and do something thoughtful for them together.

    Talk about it

    • How can you show someone that you care?
    • Who makes you feel loved by the things they do?
    • How can our actions help someone experience God’s love?

    Let’s pray

God, thank you for loving us. Help us share your love through our words, our actions, and the way we care for one another. Amen.

    Hospitality: Making Room for Love

My trip to Wisconsin offered a reminder: hospitality is alive and well. At the Packers game, fans of opposing teams laughed and celebrated together. In Algoma, a conversation with two sisters from Kansas became an experience of connection. Strangers became companions simply by asking questions and listening.

That same spirit is at the heart of our calling at St. Matthew.

In Luke 10:38–42, Martha welcomes Jesus into her home while Mary sits at his feet. Martha becomes overwhelmed by preparations, but Jesus reminds her that being present with him matters most. The lesson is not to abandon the work of hospitality, but to remember its purpose.

We need Martha’s willing hands and Mary’s attentive heart.

On November 1, we welcome a wedding into our space. On November 7, we invite our neighbors to join us for food, fun, music, and fellowship. These gatherings offer opportunities to share God’s love beyond Sunday morning.

Preparation matters, but perfection is not our goal. Connection is.

Let’s welcome our neighbors with smiles, curiosity instead of judgment, and love instead of indifference. Together, we can offer a safe, affirming place where people experience the compassion of Jesus through the hospitality of our church family

  • Kids’ News: Make a Ripple

    Scripture: 1 Thessalonians 1:1–10

Have you ever tossed a pebble into still water? The pebble is small, but the ripples can travel much farther than you might expect.

Our lives can make ripples, too.

Paul wrote to a group of Christians whose faith and love were making a difference. Other people noticed how they lived, and their example encouraged people far beyond their own community.

You can make that kind of ripple. A kind word might change someone’s day. Welcoming someone who feels alone might help them know they belong. When someone sees you forgive, share, encourage, or help, it might inspire them to do the same.

God can take a small act of love and carry it farther than we ever see.

    Living It This Week

Start one ripple of kindness and see where it goes.

    Family Challenge

Do one unexpected act of kindness together for someone outside your family.

    Talk about it

    • How can one kind action lead to another?
    • Who has been a good example for you?
    • What kind of ripple would you like to start?

    Let’s pray

God, thank you for letting us be part of your work. Help us share your love in small ways that can make a big difference. Amen.
